May Meeting: A History of AAPI in Politics

May is Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage Month and we are pleased and honored to have former Women's Demo President and Community Leader Rozita Lee as our speaker. Tita Rozita (as she is known to many Filipinos) is a go-to person who helps solve issues concerning the local Filipino-American community. She is also tapped by mainstream groups, including the media, who want to reach out to Filipino-Americans in the area. Her advisory positions in numerous local and national Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) organizations, meanwhile, are evidence of how her views are valued by the majority.

She was the 2013 recipient of the Jean Ford Award for Participatory Democracy, and has received similar commendations from elected officials, and numerous others from local and national organizations due to her tireless advocacy. Her activism and passion to serve others was borne out of the example set by her parents, both from the Philippine province of Pangasinan. Her father was very progressive and a leader. He would gather people together for news, and to discuss issues while her mother served up breakfast and lunch to people in their Lahaina neighborhood as a way to augment the family income.

Additionally, she served as President of Women's Democratic Club of Clark County from 1995-1996.

LOCATION: SEIU Nevada Local 1107 is located in Suite 165 inside the main building located at 2250 S. Rancho Drive. The closest cross streets are Rancho and Sahara.

COST: There is no cost to attend. All Democrats are welcome. 

LUNCH: Anyone who wishes to eat lunch during this meeting may purchase a box lunch. No meals will be available for purchase OR payment on site - they MUST be ordered and paid for in advance. The deadline to order is Tuesday, May 9 at noon. 

MENU: Each box contains a chocolate chip chunk cookie and a side.

Includes a mini deep dish pizza and starter salad.

Choices: Vegetarian, BBQ Chicken, Pepperoni Extreme, Gourmet Five-Meat, or Cheese and Tomate

2. Pasta Box - $14.95

Includes a pasta, starter salad and a garlic knot

Choices: Jumbo spaghetti and meatballs or grilled chicken alfredo

3. Sandwich Box: $13.95

Includes a full-sized sandwich, house-made chips and a crisp apple

Choices: Mediterranean Chicken or California Veggie

4. Specialty Entree Box - $18.95

Includes an entree and a starter salad

Choices: Lemon-Thyme Chicken
