Carol Chesnut Law School Scholarship

The Carol Chesnut Law School Scholarship honors the spirit of perseverance, purpose, and lifelong learning. This scholarship supports Nevada registered Democratic women of all ages pursuing a Law Degree — women who are ready to make a difference in their communities, their profession, and the world.

About the Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded annually to one or more Nevada registered Democratic female students attending an accredited law school. The scholarship is a one-time grant and must be used for tuition or academic expenses directly through the student’s chosen school.

Scholarship funds are presented at the Women’s Equality Day Luncheon in August, a celebration of women’s achievements and a reminder of the work still ahead for equality and justice.

Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be registered to vote as a Democrat in the State of Nevada, or if not yet of voting age, identify as a Democrat;

  • Be a member of the Women’s Democratic Club of Clark County or be referred by a current member in good standing;

  • Be enrolled or planning to enroll at a law school for the upcoming Fall semester.

Selection Process
The scholarship is highly competitive and reflects both academic potential and a demonstrated commitment to Democratic values and community service. Recipients are chosen by a committee of WDC members who share Carol’s belief in empowering women of all ages through education.

How the Scholarship Is Funded
This scholarship is made possible through the generous donations of individuals who believe in Carol’s legacy — and in supporting women who are committed to enter the legal profession. Every contribution helps another woman achieve her educational goals and carry forward Carol’s vision of justice, equality, and opportunity.

A History of Carol Chesnut

Carol’s life was a tapestry of courage, intellect, and compassion — woven together by her unwavering belief in education and equality. A brilliant student, she graduated with honors from the University of Colorado and earned the highest score in the nation on the National Honors Exam. Her early work in economics and public policy, including on the National Income Maintenance Experiment and Canada’s Mincome Manitoba, reflected her deep commitment to fairness and opportunity for all.

But Carol’s story is more than one of achievement — it is one of reinvention. After years of managing a successful consulting firm and dedicating herself to Democratic campaigns and community causes, Carol made a bold, deeply personal decision: she returned to school to study law at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. It was a leap of faith, a testament to her lifelong love of learning and her belief that it is never too late to follow your purpose.

While waiting to take the California Bar, Carol volunteered at a free legal clinic for the homeless in San Francisco, bringing hope and humanity to those who had lost both. Later, in Las Vegas, she served her community as an attorney in estate, probate, and elder law, and as a devoted activist and leader — helping found Sí Se Puede, serving as chaplain for the Women’s Democratic Club, and earning the distinction of Grassroots Democrat of the Year and, ultimately, of the Decade.

Carol believed in lifting others, especially women, to achieve their dreams. She knew that education could open doors at any stage of life. The Carol Chesnut Law School Scholarship is a living tribute to that belief — offering financial assistance to women of all ages who aspire to enter the legal profession.

By contributing to this fund, you help carry forward Carol’s legacy — empowering future generations of women who, like her, have the courage to begin again, to fight for justice, and to make the world a kinder, fairer place.

Let us honor Carol’s remarkable journey by ensuring that her light continues to guide others toward their own.
